Tournament Details

Hastings Masters
A 9 round accelerated Swiss Pairing tournament
Monday 28 December 2009 to Tuesday 5 January 2010

This event will provide opportunities to qualify for titles and for the FIDE Rating List. Such ratings go down to 1200, so it would be reasonable for any player graded over ECF 80 to aspire to a partial FIDE Rating here.

Rate of play. 40 moves in 100 minutes, then 20 moves in 50 minutes, followed by all moves in 15 minutes with the addition of 30 seconds for each move from the start.

The two highest placed eligible players, not already qualified, will be entitled to play in the British Championship 25 July to 7 August 2009 in Canterbury.

The entry fee will be reduced by 50% for players aged under 21 or over 60 on 01.09.2009 and for registered disabled players.

All English entrants are required to be members of the English Chess Federation and must quote their membership number when entering.  Other entrants are required to be members of a national federation affiliated to FIDE.

John Robinson Trust: Bursaries may be available for suitable English players under 21. Apply to Cynthia Gurney cynthia@englishchess.org.uk as soon as possible.

Prizes: £2000, £1200, £750, £500, £350, £250, £200
plus Horntye Park Brilliancy Prize £100 + trophy

The winner will hold the Golombek Trophy for one year.

The highest placed player
who is neither a GM nor IM
Best Relative FIDE Rating performance by a player rated under 2200

The highest placed eligible player not already qualified will be entitled to play in the British Championship in Canterbury 25 July to 7 August 2010. In addition, up to 3 players meeting at least 7 FIDE Rated opponents, with a Tournament Rating Performance greater or equal to 2350 shall qualify.

GM Chris Ward will provide commentaries on the games in progress, starting at 14.45 each afternoon

Names of entrants to this and all other tournaments will appear from the start of October. The final cross-tables of all tournaments will be displayed.

The best improvement in FIDE rating by a player staying at the White Rock Hotel, earns the right to a 50% reduction in the Hastings events of his/her choice in 2010-2011.

Christmas Morning Tournament
Monday 28 December 2009 to Friday 1 January 2010

Five round Swiss tournament over five days. See Congress Diary for playing times.
This event will be in graded sections of approximately 16 players.

Entry fee: £28
Prizes (for each section): £120, £75, £50, plus a grading prize of £30
Rate of play:
40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by all the moves in 20 minutes. 


Christmas Afternoon Tournament
Monday 28 December 2009 to Friday 1 January 2010

Five round Swiss tournament over five days. See Congress Diary for playing times.
This event will be in graded sections of approximately 16 players.

Entry fee: £28
Prizes (for each section): £120, £75, £50 plus a grading prize of £30

Rate of play: 40 moves in 120 minutes followed by all moves in 60 minutes.


Any player competing in both Christmas tournaments may deduct £6 from the total entry fee. 


New Year Tournament
Monday 4 January 2010 to Tuesday 5 January 2010

Four round Swiss tournament over two days. See Congress Diary for playing times.
This event will be in graded sections of approximately 16 players.

Entry fee: £20
Prizes (for each section): £100, £70, £40, plus a grading prize of £30
Rate of play:
40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by all the moves in 20 minutes.


Hastings Weekend Congress
Saturday 2 January to Sunday 3 January 2010
First round 09.30hrs. See Congress Diary for playing times.

Open Tournament
Open to all players 

The highest placed eligible player not already qualified will be entitled to play in the British Championship in Canterbury 25 July to 7 August 2010 .

Entry fee: £30
Prizes: £300, £200, £100 plus a grading prize of £100 for players below ECF 190.

Major Tournament
Open to players below ECF 170 (Elo 1960)
Entry fee: £26
Prizes: £300, £200, £100, plus a grading prize of £50 for players below ECF 155.

Minor Tournament
Open to players below ECF 145 (Elo 1760)
Entry fee: £26
Prizes: £300, £200, £100, plus a grading prize of £50 for players below ECF 130

Under-120 Tournament
For players below ECF 120 (Elo 1560) or with no previous experience of competitive chess 
Entry fee £15
Prizes: £100, £75, £50, £25 plus a grading prizes of £25 for players graded below ECF 100 and ECF 80.

Players may take a ½ point bye in any round except the last. Requests for such byes must be stated on the entry form.

Rate of play: 40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by all the moves in 20 minutes. 


Default time:

Players arriving 30 minutes or more after the start of a session in any event shall lose be forfeited, unless the arbiter decides otherwise.
