THE HASTINGS CHALLENGER No. 7

White to play and mate in 2

A R Gooderson

The Field 1963

Key: 1.Rh4 (threat 2.Bd4 mate)

1…Ne4 2.Qd4 mate

1…Nf3 2.Qd3 mate

1…Re4 2.Qd2 mate

1…Ne6 2.Re4 mate

1…Bxd5+ 2.Nxd5 mate

This problem is all about unpins of the white queen. In the diagram, the queen is pinned on the long diagonal. After the key, Black can defend the threatened 2.Bd4 mate in various ways, but three of his defences (the first three variations given above) involve unpinning the white queen, which then gives mate. Note too, how a different queen mate follows each of the three different unpins.
